Spay or neuter your pets

Spaying and neutering of your pets is good for you, your animal and your community.

An estimated 7 million unwanted cats and dogs were euthanized nationwide in 2008.  That number for Cumberland County was probably close to 4,000.  According to the American Humane Association, within seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 more cats.  One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 more dogs in the same seven years.  Sterilization of pet cats and dogs is the only successful strategy to combat pet overpopulation problems.

Spayed and neutered animals have lower health risks, better behavior and are less likely to get into fights.  Sterilized cats and dogs are much less likely to mark their territory with urine.  They avoid many diseases by being spayed / neutered, too.

Sterilized females do not go into heat, thereby avoiding the related problems.  Sterilized males will not tend to roam as much.  These procedures can be done, with the proper training, as young as 8 weeks for dogs and 10 weeks for cats.  Cats can conceive by their fifth month, so don’t delay.

Please consider having your cats and dogs spayed or neutered; it truly is good for you, your pets and our community.  If you need financial assistance, contact Wags and Whiskers Pet Rescue at 788-2201 to see if they can help.  Remember… “Please Don’t Litter — Fix Your Critter.”
