The Cumberland County Mayor race was won by Kenneth Carey, Jr. over Bruce Wyatt by a total of 8190 to 6290. Incumbent Sheriff Butch Burgess retained his position as the county’s chief law enforcement officer by defeating challenger Jackie Stevens 8082 to 6702. With a similar margin, Kim Tollett Wyatt was the victor in the County Trustee race with 8075 votes versus Margie Hicks’ 6278.

The only other contested race on the county level besides commissioner seats was for Road Superintendent. In that contest, challenger Scott Blaylock defeated reigning office holder Wendell Houston by the widest margin seen in this election (9268 to 5370).

Circuit Court Clerk Larry Sherrill, County Clerk Jule Bryson and Register of Deeds Judy Graham Swallows were unopposed in their campaigns for reelection.

In the district 9 county commission race, of which Fairfield Glade is a part, incumbents Clyde Cramer and Carmin Lynch held off Art Meharg to retain their seats.

The race of interest at the state level was the one for State Representative. Cameron Sexton defeated present lawmaker Eric Swafford in the Republican primary and will face Democrat Charles Ray Rains in the November election. Knoxville mayor Bill Haslem was victorious in his bid to be the Republican nominee for Governor. He is set to face Democrat Mike McWherter in the state general election.

By KEN STEADMAN

Another Fairfield Glade Lions Travelogue series will come to an end April 5, 2010. The Lions have sponsored the Travelogue Series for thirty years with ventures all over the world. It’s a great way to take a vacation from the comfort of the Palace Theater seats. The show starts at 7:00pm and tickets are available at the door for $6 per person.

Think Wales for this one and behold images of Celts, choirs, castles, coalmines, coastline and pastoral mountain valleys dotted with sheep. Wales is a small country with its own language and a large influence. We’ll explore U.S. – Welsh connections, particularly in Upstate New York, as well as the historic homeland on the eastern shore of the Irish Sea. Join filmmaking musicians Monty and Marsha Brown for your final memorable journey to Wales: Land of Song.

You will enter Wales at the second Seven Crossing, the newish suspension bridge near Bristol that accommodates M4 motorway. You arrive in Caerphilly, (named for the cheese) who has a wonderful castle with a tower leaning more obtusely than the one in Pisa. There are other distinctions, as do nearly all the castles in Wales, but mostly it sits in the center of town and is surrounded by attractive parklands.

Next is the city of Gower. Wales is a small country, smaller than the Netherlands or Massachusetts, containing much environmental diversity, but the Gower, Swansea’s backyard is an even smaller country. It has four coasts: on the east is the city and below that the built-up seaside resorts of Mumbles and Oystermouth that sweep Swansea Bay with hotels, B&Bs and various beachfront entertainments. The south coast borders the Bristol Channel and features many picturesque bays and inlets with high-forested cliffs.

The western side of Gower faces the open Irish Sea where surfers treasure the beaches, and the northern coast is mostly salt marsh and the estuary. Guidebooks may be rude about the salt marsh but gourmets prize the lambs that are grown there because they come ready-seasoned. You will visit sheep farms that have their own castle and the American Watchtower, a relic of World War II, where American artillery underwent special training for the Normandy Invasion.

High on a moor above Oldwalls Leisure you will find Kind Arthur’s Stone sitting relatively undisturbed for some 6,000 years. This stone is a capstone weighing many tons, which was somehow leveled up on the top of several standing stones. There are great views of Gower from the stone: the beaches, the Irish Sea, the estuary and salt marshes, and some stone-cottaged villages.

You will also be able to experience a typical Welsh weather day when you visit the capital city of Cardiff. It will rain, become cloudy with spells of sun, rain some more and finally in the evening some more sun shone warmly on this rapidly modernizing city. The harbor area is a particularly intriguing mix of the ancient port that exported more coal than Newcastle, and the modern capital with its Opera House and glass and glider debating chamber for the Walsh Assembly.

All of this for only $6 per person. The concession stand will be opened for some tasty popcorn and refreshing drinks. Sit back and enjoy a couple hours traveling to “Wales: Land of Song”.

Many of the hundreds who attend the Youth Expo each spring and many more experiencing it for the first time, will learn about it from reading this five minute article.

Begun four years ago by CACE (Cumberland Artisans for Creative Expression) as a salute to youth interested in the artistic world, the Youth Expo was seen as a new and unique way to support and encourage those who took serious interest in the many facets of the creative world of art. Whether writing, performing, visual, three dimensional, music, or the endless variety of fine art crafts, it has been enthusiastically welcomed and supported by students, who find it exciting that they can publicly exhibit their art works.

Goals of the Youth Expo are to exhibit visual works and performances of school youth, and to provide “hands-on” experiences for youth in the areas of arts, crafts, and performance (such as spinning, weaving, caning, painting, dulcimer playing).

The visitor, upon entering the Expo at the Community Complex, will be struck by the visual art (several hundred pieces) produced by area students; all public schools, plus homeschoolers, will be represented. The students’ art has been matted by the Art and Frame Shop of Crossville. Also enjoy three dimensional art created by students.

Youth Expo activities will start at 10:00 A.M. with a recital by the Children of Crossville Preparatory Chamber Orchestra; the director is Mrs. Jeanie Kinslow of Stone Memorial High School. Other musical groups are expected to perform and will be announced. Attendees will enjoy viewing the student art while observing or participating in “hands-on” craft demonstrations. All are invited to join in the large variety of craft skills offered. Try your hand one-on-one with the instructors.

The Youth Expo is a one-day event—from 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 10. Admission is free with ample parking. Two large rooms are reserved at the Cumberland County Community Complex, located on Livingston Road near its intersection with West Avenue (State Road 70 North) in Crossville. There will be no food service.

CACE was founded with a mission “to identify, support, and encourage the varied artistic and creative individuals and groups within Cumberland County, Tennessee.” A 501(c)(3) volunteer not-for-profit organization, CACE is funded by members and sponsor/donors and partially with a state ABC grant. For more information, contact Youth Expo coordinator Sharron Eckert at 277-5425. Or E-mail steckert@frontiernet.net.

The Tennessee Section PGA unveiled the new Distinguished Career Award (DCA) Display at Golf House Tennessee February 28. The Distinguished Career Award recognizes current or former Tennessee PGA Section members who have had outstanding careers as PGA Professionals based on service to his or her club, course or employer, service and leadership to the Association, community service, professional playing record and teaching ability. The Distinguished Career Award acknowledges Tennessee PGA Professionals as vital and significant contributors to the game of golf. The renovated hallway now recognizes twenty eight PGA Professionals including names such as Cary Middlecoff, Lou Graham, Mason Rudolph, Joe Campbell, Gibby Gilbert and Loren Roberts.

Joining that elite list of former PGA Tour players is Cookeville’s own, Bobby Greenwood. Greenwood was introduced to golf at Cookeville Country Club at the age of twelve. After earning a three-time NCAA All-American career at North Texas State University, Greenwood was noted as one of the best amateurs in the country during the 1960’s. He was twice ranked in the Top 10 Amateur golfers in America by Golf Magazine. Greenwood won the 1966 Tennessee State Amateur and the 1968 Tennessee State Open, and played the PGA Tour from 1969 to 1975 carding six top 10s and fifteen top 25s, while also winning the 1970 Rhode Island Open while on the Tour. He played in two US Opens, two USGA Amateurs, eight Tennessee Cup Match Teams, three Senior Tennessee PGA titles and currently is the President of his own golf course architectural firm in Cookeville. Bobby designed and supervised construction of our Dorchester Golf Course in 1977. Greenwood is also a member of the University of North Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame and Riverside Military Centennial All-Sports Hall of Fame.

Greenwood was one of fifteen past and current recipients who were on hand for this special unveiling in Franklin, Tennessee in front of their fellow Tennessee PGA Professionals and special guests.

See a future edition of the VISTA for an upcoming special event featuring an appearance by Bobby Greenwood.

FAIRFIELD GLADE-After 4 years in its previous location, the Fairfield Glade VISTA newspaper has moved its operations to a new office. The office is now located at 3056 Peavine Road in the Petrie’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning building, just behind Peavine Care Center.

Visitors are welcome at our new location during normal business hours – Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The new location provides a more accessible facility for the public with better parking and should be easier to locate. The best way to send information or get in touch with the staff is through email: gladevista@frontiernet.net or call 484-6342.

Petrie Heating & Air Conditioning still serving clients in Fairfield Glade

Contrary to some rumors, Petrie’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning would like to reassure their many clients that they are still here to serve you. Randal Petrie remains the owner and has been for 17 years. The recent name change from Petrie Heating & Cooling to Petrie’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning and the fact that their facility on Peavine Road is now “for sale” have created some confusion about the future of Mr. Petrie’s business.

The name was changed because they are now a member of the largest, fastest growing, residential service franchise organization in North America. With regards to the property being for sale, Petrie said, “We are selling this facility simply because we no longer need the space. With the downturn in the economy and our decision to discontinue our “new construction” division, we have a smaller workforce and fewer trucks, and therefore, require less space. Due to these reductions, we have been able to consolidate our operations into one facility which has reduced our overhead. This is good news for all our clients because it helps keep prices more competitive.” he continued.

“Both of these changes were made in an effort to stay competitive and to stabilize our business for the benefit of our clients, our employees, and our owners. In summary, we have not “sold the business” and we are not “going out of business” in Fairfield Glade, Cumberland County, or anywhere else for that matter.” Petrie said.

CROSSVILLE-The deadline for filing papers to participate in the upcoming county elections has come and gone. The candidates have been certified and no problems were found during the qualifying process. Countywide, voters will be casting ballots for every major elected office except two in May primaries and in the quadrennial county general election in August.

The county mayor race has heated up since incumbent Brock Hill announced he won’t run for re-election. Bruce Wyatt is unopposed in the May Primary on the Democratic ticket, while three others, Kenneth Carey, Jr., Eric Newman and Tony Perry, will vie for the Republican spot on the ballot in the general election in August.

Two pairs will run for the nomination to represent their party in the County Sheriff race. Incumbent Sheriff Butch Burgess and Terry White will run as Republicans, meanwhile Gene Hall and Jackie Stevens will compete as Democrats. The two winners will face off in the general election.

Ten candidates have submitted their name in the race to replace long-time Trustee Carolyn Turner, who decided not to run again. Democrats Margie Hicks, Greg Lack, Todd Luster and Brenda Phillips will compete to face who emerges from Republican candidates Greg Barnwell, Nathan Brock, Kathy Dillon, Bob Scarbrough, Deanna Smith and Kim Wyatt, in the August general election.

Cumberland County Road Superintendent candidates are Democrats Billy Hall and incumbent Wendell Houston; and Republicans Scott Blaylock and Joe Miller, Jr.

Incumbents who are unopposed in the upcoming election are Circuit Court Clerk Larry Sherrill, Circuit Court Judge Amy Hollars, County Clerk Jule Bryson, District Attorney Randall York and Registrar Judy Swallows.

Cumberland County Commissioners deadline for filing is April 1, 2010. Two commissioners are elected for each of the nine districts in the county.
