The fourth Fairfield Glade Lions Club Travelogue will take you on a great venture, “Cruising Russia- St. Petersburg to Moscow”. This will be a once in a lifetime cruise for most of you. It will take place on Monday February 1, 2010 at the Palace Theater starting at 7:00pm.
You will experience a spectacular voyage through the heart of Russia. You will travel the scenic and historic Russian waterways, along the Neva; go across lakes Ladoga and Onega (two of the largest lakes in Europe), and down the Volga-Baltic Waterway through river locks.
St Petersburg holds fascination of a time past. Created by Peter the Great to be his “window on Europe”, it is considered to be the cultural heart of modern Russia. Cruise the canals around the Church of Spilled Blood and visit Peterhof and its spectacular fountains.
Visits to small towns and the enchanting Golden Ring cities of Yaroslavl, Kostroma and Uglich provide unique opportunities to delve into Russian culture. In Yaroslavl you will visit the Transfiguration Monastery Church of Elyjah the Prophet. See local handicrafts in Kostroma. In Kitzhi you’ll explore the exciting Museum of Wooden Architecture. In picturesque Uglich the Transfiguration Cathedral is a reverent and historic stop. You will join a Russian family home for breakfast. At the small farming town of Goritsy is the Monastery of St. Cyril on the White Lake.
Witness the pageantry of the Changing of the Guard in Red Square. Marvel at the famous upscale Gumm Department Store. Moscow brings a chance to experience the grandeur of Red Square and the Kremlin. It is a city of contrasts, with modern skyscrapers alongside ancient monasteries. Beautiful churches and historic buildings are being restored to their former glory. The changing economy is bustling and offers exciting shops and street markets to explore.
Tickets are available at the door for $6 per person. A very reasonable price for an informative and visual picture of Russia.
CAPTION: Clint Denn, your creator and speaker for the evening, is shown in Russia’s Red Square. This is only one of the many cities you will visit in the February 1st Lions Travelogue.
